Art Malik, Fred Loxley and Mirren Mack have joined Ascension as series regulars. The Apple TV psychological horror thriller is led by Caitríona Balfe, who also serves as an executive producer. The previously announced cast includes Bill Nighy, Amanda Plummer, Christopher Chung and T’Nia Miller.

Inspired by Adam Nevill’s novel Last Days, the one-hour series follows Rose (Balfe), a recently divorced mother and documentary filmmaker known for uncovering other people’s truths. When she starts a project about the Church of Ascension, a mysterious 20th-century cult, she finds comfort in its teachings before uncovering a more sinister reality.

The series explores evil and innocence and asks what people might sacrifice to protect those they love, even when they could be the greatest danger to them.

Apple Studios is producing the series, with Anonymous Content also serving as a production company. Executive producers include Alfonso Cuarón and Carlos Cuarón, Gabriela Rodriguez and Richard Schwartz of Esperanto Filmoj, and Steve Golin, David Levine and Zack Hayden of Anonymous Content. James and White are also executive producers. The series is written by James, White, Alfonso Cuarón and Carlos Cuarón, with James as lead director.
