Emily Osment's path to Chuck Lorre's Big Bang universe did not begin with Young Sheldon. Before she played Mandy McAllister on the series and reprised the role in the spin-off Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage — now in its third season on CBS — she had a recurring part on another Lorre show, the Netflix series The Kominsky Method.

The Kominsky Method centers on Sandy Kominsky (Michael Douglas), a once-successful actor who now teaches acting classes in Hollywood. Osment's character, Theresa, is one of the students in his class. She appeared in 16 episodes across the show's three-season run from 2018 to 2021, and was part of the ensemble recognized with nominations at the 2019 and 2022 Actor Awards (formerly the Screen Actors Guild Awards) for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series.

The show became a family affair at the end of Season 2, when Osment's brother, Haley Joel Osment, joined the cast as Robbie, the grandson of Sandy's friend Norman (Alan Arkin). Robbie appears in the Season 2 finale as well as in Season 3. The siblings, however, do not share a storyline: they appear together in a wedding scene but their characters never interact.

The two, both former child actors, have also voiced multiple characters on Family Guy without properly sharing the screen. Haley Joel has said he would like that to change. "I know something will happen eventually because she's great and I'm so proud of everything she's done," he told Us Weekly.

Osment's television comedy career began well before either Lorre series. She played Lilly Truscott, the best friend of the title character, on Disney Channel's Hannah Montana from 2006 to 2011, and later took leading roles as an adult in the sitcoms Young & Hungry and Pretty Smart. She and her brother have credited their father, actor Michael Osment, with helping guide their acting careers.
