Bruce Springsteen has endorsed Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate in Michigan’s race for the U.S. Senate. El-Sayed is running against Republican nominee Mike Rogers in this year’s midterm election.
In an Instagram post ahead of Election Day, Springsteen described El-Sayed as a fighter for the Constitution and American democracy, and against what he called the “corrupt, lawless, and anti-American leadership currently in the White House.” Springsteen added that he was “in his corner 100%.”
El-Sayed, a progressive Democrat, would become the first Muslim senator in U.S. history if elected. The article says he has faced political attacks from President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance and their supporters over his religious background. Former President Barack Obama, former Vice President Kamala Harris and several entertainment figures have also backed him.
Actor Adam Brody has appeared in a video supporting El-Sayed, produced with Swing Left’s Ground Truth. Brody said he was helping elect El-Sayed and win back the House, and voiced support for Medicare for all and keeping money out of politics.
Springsteen has also spoken publicly against Trump and Republicans. In this summer’s PBS special “Bruce Springsteen: Finding America in Song,” he described patriotism as loving the country enough to recognize its faults and encourage it to improve.
