Dann Florek said he was surprised to learn that Captain Donald Cragen would be killed off in the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 27 premiere. Speaking on the Tis Yourself podcast, Florek described the news as unexpected and said he tried to challenge the decision after receiving the call, but the show’s decision-makers had already made up their minds.

Florek said he did not fully understand why the character’s exit was considered necessary. His surprise was heightened by his guest appearances on Law & Order: Organized Crime, which had led him to believe that Cragen’s story was entering a new phase. He said he thought the appearances were revealing a less restrained side of the character and offering a broader look at his personality outside the squad room.

The actor also discussed the reaction from viewers after his departure from SVU. Fans recalled their favorite episodes and moments involving Cragen, a response Florek described as bittersweet but heartwarming. He played the character for 35 years.

Mariska Hargitay, who stars as Captain Olivia Benson, previously reflected on Cragen’s funeral during an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show. She said the scenes felt especially natural because of the genuine affection for both the character and Florek, with returning cast members including Dean Winters, B.D. Wong and Christopher Meloni adding to the emotional impact.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has aired since 1999 and is described in the source material as the longest-running scripted live-action series in American television history. Season 28 premiered on October 8, 2026.
