Godzilla Minus Zero, Takashi Yamazaki’s follow-up to the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One, expands the scale of the monster action while retaining the human story that helped distinguish the 2023 film. Set two years later and filmed for IMAX, the sequel centers on a new threat: King Ghidorah, who dominates the skies over Matsumoto after Godzilla is believed to have died.

Kenju Noda, head of the Large Scale Disaster Response Bureau, proposes using electrocution to drive Ghidorah away. His plan brings together meteorologist Masami Aoyama and Professor Kanji Murakami, a Hiroshima bombing survivor. The U.S. Army is also involved, though the review notes that its interests differ from those of the other characters.

Godzilla is absent for much of the film’s 135-minute runtime, as the story first follows Ghidorah and the returning Shikishima family. Koichi and Noriko are now married and raising five-year-old Akiko, but Noriko’s connection to Godzilla draws them into the crisis. When the authorities decide they need Godzilla to defeat Ghidorah, they must find a way to bring the creature out of hiding.

The review describes the eventual clash between the two kaiju as spectacular, praising the visual effects and the film’s IMAX presentation. It also highlights the family drama, including a painful separation involving Akiko that puts the characters’ duty to their country against their responsibilities to one another.

Godzilla Minus Zero is directed and written by Yamazaki, who also oversees the visual effects. The Japanese-language film, with English subtitles, is distributed by Toho and G Kids and is rated R. It is scheduled to open on November 6, 2026. Its ending leaves open the possibility of another installment.
