Hannah Einbinder followed through on a promise to imitate Michigan Rep. Haley Stevens after Abdul El-Sayed won the state’s Senate race on Tuesday night. The Hacks star, who was watching the midterm results from a bar, shared the impression in an Instagram Story shortly after El-Sayed’s victory.
In the clip, Einbinder, speaking as Stevens, says: “We’re gonna give ’em a little bit of energy, a little bit of pow, a little bit of stick it to ’em, cos that’s the Michigan way!” In a separate post, she celebrated El-Sayed’s win with the message, “Mazel tov, Abdul.”
El-Sayed defeated Mike Rogers and became the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate. The victory came after Stevens, who had narrowly lost the Democratic Senate primary to El-Sayed in August, announced on Sunday that she would support his Republican opponent instead.
Stevens’ endorsement drew criticism from Michigan Democratic leaders, including state party chair Curtis Hertel, and several members of her congressional staff resigned in protest. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer also condemned the endorsement. Stevens’ subsequent CNN interview with Anderson Cooper, in which he repeatedly asked about her reversal, circulated online and became material for late-night hosts Seth Meyers and Jon Stewart.
The midterm results also included Democratic Senate victories in Texas, Iowa, Kansas and Maine, where Troy Jackson unseated longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins. Democrats also flipped governorships in Texas, Iowa, Ohio and Georgia, and secured control of both chambers of Congress, according to the supplied report.
