Inde Navarrette will receive the Rising Star Award at the Palm Springs International Film Awards, according to Variety. The actor earned recognition for her performance in Focus Features’ horror film “Obsession.”
Navarrette joins a previously announced group of honorees that includes Seth Rogen, Olivia Wilde, Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton, who will share the Vanguard Award for “The Invite.”
“Obsession” premiered to strong reviews, has a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score and has grossed more than $500 million worldwide, according to the information reported. The film also recently received a Gotham Award nomination, while critics have highlighted Navarrette’s emotionally intense performance and linked it to the best actress Oscar race.
Palm Springs has become an important stop during awards season, and the Rising Star Award has previously gone to performers including Ariana Grande for “Wicked,” Timothée Chalamet for “Call Me by Your Name,” Alicia Vikander for “The Danish Girl,” Jennifer Lawrence for “Winter’s Bone,” Anna Kendrick for “Up in the Air” and Scarlett Johansson for “Lost in Translation.” Grande, Chalamet, Vikander, Lawrence and Kendrick later received Academy Award nominations for those performances, with Vikander winning the supporting actress award.
“Inde Navarrette delivers a performance in ‘Obsession’ that is impossible to look away from,” festival chairman Nachhattar Singh Chandi said in a statement. He praised her emotional awareness and screen presence, adding that the award recognizes breakthrough talent.
Written, edited and directed by Curry Barker, “Obsession” follows Bear, a hopeless romantic who breaks the mysterious One Wish Willow in an attempt to win over his crush. His wish comes with a sinister price. Navarrette plays Nikki Freeman alongside Michael Johnston, Megan Lawless, Cooper Tomlinson and Andy Richter.
Navarrette previously appeared in the fourth and final season of Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why” and later joined The CW’s superhero series “Superman & Lois” as a regular cast member. She made her Sundance debut in 2020 in “Wander Darkly,” opposite Sienna Miller and Diego Luna.
Her upcoming projects include the role of Rogue in Marvel’s “X-Men” film and “The Waffle House Index,” a science-fiction thriller from Apple Original Films and Plan B Entertainment, in which she will star and serve as an executive producer.
