John Oliver used the latest Last Week Tonight to continue his focus on the Nov. 3 midterm elections, after previously devoting much of the show to what he described as disturbing ties between MAGA midterm candidates and neo-Nazis. On Sunday night, he focused on Trump's rallies, which he said have become increasingly unhinged, and on Republican midterm candidates distancing themselves from Trump amid low approval ratings.
Oliver highlighted a recent Trump midterm convention where Trump led the crowd in a pledge to vote red. According to the source, the pledge included the line that the president loves the crowd so much "he can't even breathe" and a warning that not voting would send people to hell. Oliver mocked the language, asking what "Paramore lyrics" Trump was talking about, and joked about the idea of Jeffrey Epstein arriving in hell only to be told his problem was "lack of civic engagement."
Oliver also noted that Trump has suggested a vote for Republicans is a vote for him, while a New Yorker report said more than 99% of GOP ad spending is now going to spots that do not mention Trump. He cited Michigan Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers, who, when NBC News' Kristen Welker asked on Meet the Press whether a vote for him was a vote for the Trump agenda, said he was "apologizing" and "having some difficulty in my earpiece." Oliver responded that Rogers' dodge was obvious, saying he had not seen someone dodge a question that shamelessly since he spent three hours gasping at two complete lunatics who have never blinked.
He then pointed to a picture of Elizabeth Holmes and Billy Evans in the Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim documentary You Can See Everything. Oliver said the Last Week Tonight staff has become so obsessed with the film that it is interfering with the show. He asked viewers who want to talk about the movie to contact anyone who works there, adding that it has "derailed our workflow to an unacceptable degree."
