Jon Stewart used Monday night’s episode of The Daily Show to criticize Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens for endorsing Republican Mike Rogers shortly before Election Day, despite previously backing Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and denouncing Rogers.
Stewart played clips of Stevens warning that Rogers would support Donald Trump’s actions and would not speak up if tariffs harmed Michigan’s auto industry. In one earlier remark, she called Rogers “a nightmare.” Stevens later endorsed him in a video posted Sunday, prompting Stewart to joke about the setting and question what had led to the reversal.
Stewart also suggested that Stevens’ reported frustration over not being invited to El-Sayed’s campaign events did not explain why she supported Rogers. Stevens had said she was “never been invited” to one of his events. “That says why you’re mad at Abdul, but not why you’re for Rogers,” Stewart said, again recalling her description of Rogers as a nightmare.
The host also poked fun at Stevens’ Sunday appearance on CNN, where she discussed the endorsement with Anderson Cooper. Stewart highlighted an awkward pause in the interview and joked that Stevens had prompted Cooper to respond sharply.
Earlier in the monologue, Stewart criticized Donald Trump’s closing message before the midterms. He said Trump focused on the Reflecting Pool during his speech, including its size and color, rather than on political issues. Stewart described it as a speech about the pool itself.
