Best Medicine is adding a new member to Louisa’s family in Season 2, with Katey Sagal set to recur as Kathleen Gavin, the character’s estranged mother. Her episodes are scheduled to air later in the season.

According to the official character description, Kathleen is combative, conniving and primarily concerned with looking out for herself. She is also described as the only person unwelcome in the Maine town of Port Wenn, where residents refer to her as “Shady Katie.”

Kathleen’s return follows a long absence and is expected to create significant problems for Louisa, played by Abigail Spencer. The character’s calculating nature contrasts sharply with Louisa’s kind and selfless personality.

Sagal is known for playing Peggy Bundy throughout Married... With Children and Gemma on Sons of Anarchy, a performance that earned her the 2011 Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Drama. Her other television credits include The Conners, The Abandons, Rebel, Superior Donuts, 8 Simple Rules, Boston Legal, Lost, This Is Us and Shameless. She has also voiced characters in Futurama and One Piece.

The actor is among several recognizable guest stars appearing in Best Medicine’s second season. Martin Clunes returns as Dr. Robert Best, the father of Josh Charles’ Dr. Martin Best. Jack Cutmore-Scott recently appeared as Parker, a professional monitor overseeing Martin’s compliance with a state medical board ruling, while Andrea Martin plays Judith, one of Aunt Sarah’s outspoken friends.
