The fourth season of HBO's The Gilded Age premiered with several surprises, most notably the silent cameos of actors Matt Damon and talk show host David Letterman. Approximately eight minutes and thirty-three seconds into the episode, the two are seen crossing a street together. Damon appears in period attire featuring a top hat, ascot, long coat, sideburns, and a fuzzy mustache, while Letterman sports his signature beard, a bowler hat, and an all-black ensemble. Neither character speaks, but they project the demeanor of serious businessmen heading to close lucrative deals. Their brief presence is noted as comical given their stature, yet it fits seamlessly into the world without distracting from the main narrative.

Beyond the celebrity appearances, the episode advances several key storylines. Oscar van Rhijn marries Enid Turner in what is described as a lavender marriage that appears to be the most functional pairing in town. Following the reception, Enid recruits Marian for after-hours entertainment at a risqué soiree. There, Marian encounters her former fiancé, Larry Russell, who teases her about her previous refusal to attend such parties. The night culminates with the pair taking cover from the rain at a local hotel, where they become lovers. The following morning, Marian panics over the potential damage to her reputation and rushes home, leaving Larry distraught.

Elsewhere, Peggy celebrates the release of her book, an event that impresses most attendees except for Elizabeth Kirkland, her future mother-in-law. Mrs. Kirkland harbors undisclosed plans for both Peggy and her mother, Dorothy Scott. In a dramatic turn across the pond, Gladys nearly dies during childbirth but survives thanks to emergency medical intervention. However, doctors were forced to perform a hysterectomy to save her life, meaning she will be unable to have more children naturally.

The episode also features a confrontation between Agnes van Rhijn and Armstrong regarding Enid's past. Armstrong reveals that Enid was formerly the lady's maid of Bertha Russell, a fact Agnes finds infuriating given it was withheld before the wedding. Despite her anger, Agnes and Enid eventually meet to clear the air. Enid admits her history but reassures Agnes that it did not affect her time as Mrs. Winterton. She further clarifies that both she and Oscar entered the marriage with full knowledge of his sexuality. Enid concludes by expressing her support for Oscar's artistic passions and Agnes' charitable endeavors. New episodes of the season will continue to air on Sunday nights at 9 pm ET/PT on HBO.
