Meta and Lionsgate have announced a partnership to convert the film 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping' into 3D format ahead of its theatrical release on November 20. This collaboration represents the first time Meta has worked with a studio specifically for a 2D-to-3D conversion. The technical process was executed in cooperation with DNEG, a visual effects company known for converting titles such as 'Dune: Part One,' 'Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,' and 'Venom.'

Beyond the cinema experience, the 3D version of the film will be available on Meta's upcoming VR glasses, priced at $1,299, when they launch in the spring. Jim Packer, Lionsgate's chief revenue officer, described the partnership as a compelling example of how technology can transform existing formats to create fresh experiences. He noted that director Francis Lawrence has crafted an incredible 3D experience for audiences to enjoy both in theaters and later on Meta's VR hardware.

Director Francis Lawrence stated that the 3D adaptation offers a new way for viewers to follow the journey of Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada as a younger version of the character originally portrayed by Woody Harrelson. The film follows the character through the 50th edition of the Hunger Games. Lawrence emphasized that the goal was to make the film feel visceral and immersive, pulling audiences deep into Haymitch's experience.

Meta previously unveiled these VR glasses at its Meta Connect event in September, promising immersive versions of 'Avengers: Infinity War' and 'Star Wars: A New Hope,' alongside 3D versions of 'The Avengers,' 'Black Panther,' and select Lionsgate titles. Sarah Malkin, head of entertainment at Meta's Reality Labs, remarked that this new 'Hunger Games' entry showcases a cinematic experience that will be phenomenal in theaters while demonstrating the technology's potential for home viewing.
