Mike Johnson will step down as Republican leader when Democrats take control of the House in January, according to multiple news outlets. Democrats are expected to hold a majority of around 75 seats, a sharp contrast with the narrow margin Republicans had under Johnson’s leadership.

Hakeem Jeffries, who has served as House minority leader for four years, is in line to become the next speaker. Johnson’s departure could prompt a contest to lead House Republicans, with Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio and current House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana among the potential candidates.

Johnson was elected speaker in 2023 after his predecessor, Kevin McCarthy, was ousted following just 10 months in the role.
