Netflix’s The Crown marks 10 years since its premiere on November 4, 2016. The historical drama, created by Peter Morgan, ran for six seasons through 2023, depicting a fictionalized account of the British royal family across Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.

The series won 24 Emmy Awards from 87 nominations, both records for a streaming original. At the 2021 Emmy Awards, its fourth season won all seven major drama categories, a first that has not been repeated since. The first season earned an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes and drew praise for its performances, historical storytelling, sets and costumes.

The show recast characters as they aged and maintained strong critical approval through its fourth season. Its final two seasons received more criticism, while production values and performances—including Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana—continued to attract awards attention.

The Crown reportedly cost more than $600 million to make across its six seasons. In 2024, Morgan described producing its 60 episodes as a major challenge and questioned whether a streaming service would undertake a production of similar scale today.
