Police Squad!, the cult comedy series starring Leslie Nielsen as detective Frank Drebin, is now available to stream on Netflix in the United States. Created by David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker, the show follows Drebin and his team as they investigate crimes, mixing police drama with visual gags and absurd humor.
ABC canceled the sitcom after four episodes, although two additional episodes aired after the decision. The series’ fast pace was reportedly considered too demanding for viewers. It later became difficult to find on streaming services, leaving physical releases as one of the few ways to watch it.
The show’s story continued on the big screen with The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, released in 1988. Nielsen returned as Drebin, with Priscilla Presley, George Kennedy and O.J. Simpson among the cast. The film led to two sequels in the 1990s: The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear and Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult.
The franchise returned in 2025 with director Akiva Schaffer’s The Naked Gun, starring Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr. The film introduced the series to a new generation, while the original Police Squad! is now available to watch on Netflix in the U.S.
