Queen Silvia held its world premiere in Cannes, where stars Alicia von Rittberg and Edvin Endre attended. Von Rittberg plays Silvia Sommerlath, who became Queen of Sweden, while Endre portrays Crown Prince Carl Gustaf. The screening also featured a live performance of ABBA’s “Dancing Queen,” which the group played at a pre-wedding gala for the royal couple.

The first season follows the couple’s relationship from their meeting at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, where Silvia was working and Carl Gustaf was a guest, through to the eve of their marriage. Producer Carsten Kelber said the romantic drama presents a modern take on relationships and female empowerment, while drawing on fictional scenes to imagine conversations and events that took place privately.

The series is destined for Prime Video in German-speaking territories and the Nordic countries, and for SAT.1 in Germany. SVT has acquired a second window in Sweden, while Beta Film is handling international sales. The production is a collaboration between Germany’s Pyjama Pictures and Sweden’s Unlimited Stories.

The producers have told the Swedish royal family about the project. Director Miguel Alexandre wrote the screenplay with Lisa Hofer and Pauline Wolff. Beta Film executive Justus Riesenkampff said the show could appeal to younger viewers and has potential for future seasons. Kelber said he hopes the series will continue beyond its first season, noting that the different phases of the couple’s long marriage could provide material for further stories.
