Roku is officially notifying customers that a long-standing feature, the fish tank screensaver known as Aquatic Life, will be removed at the beginning of next month. Affected users are currently receiving on-screen notifications stating that starting December 1, 2026, the Aquatic Life screensaver will no longer be available and their display will automatically switch to Roku City. The message advises those who prefer a different option to browse the Theme Store via Settings > Theme > Screensaver.

Roku City was originally introduced in 2017 as an "entertainment utopia" featuring city buildings, volcanoes, movie references, and easter eggs for upcoming content. Over time, the screensaver evolved into an advertising platform and a hub for interactive features and events. In April 2026, the company launched Roku City Dash, an original game set within the virtual environment that includes iconic buildings and surprises from outer space.

The screensaver has also served as a digital stage for "Live from Roku City" events, hosting original performances ranging from Demi Lovato to a New Year's celebration takeover by Wicked: For Good. Additionally, Luke Bryan utilized the platform in September for a country music promotion tied to his new album. Since its launch nearly a decade ago, the virtual city has displayed various advertisements, including billboards for Barbie and McDonald's golden arches against its purple background.

While Roku is expected to encourage users to adopt the Roku City screensaver, several other options remain available without discontinuation warnings. These alternatives include the Jungle Screensaver, Nautical Screensaver, Star Trek: The Original Series, and various holiday-themed selections.
