Sony Pictures Entertainment’s sales rose 37% year over year to $3.23 billion in the quarter ended Sept. 30, while operating income reached $488 million, up 527%. The company said the results were largely driven by the theatrical success of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”

Theatrical revenue totaled $1.28 billion, about 11 times the figure for the same period a year earlier. Alongside “Brand New Day,” horror releases “Insidious: Out of the Further” and “Resident Evil” contributed to the increase. Revenue from television productions fell 31% to $483 million.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Zendaya as MJ, opened widely on July 31. It grossed $2.52 billion worldwide over the summer, making it the third-highest-grossing movie in history, behind the original “Avatar” and “Avengers: Endgame.”

Across Sony as a whole, revenue for the quarter—its second quarter of fiscal 2026—rose 10% to 3.429 trillion yen ($21.5 billion), and net income increased 44% to 450 billion yen ($2.8 billion).

Sony’s Game & Network Services segment recorded revenue of 1.208 trillion yen ($7.6 billion), up 9%, supported by network services and game sales. The increase was partly offset by lower PlayStation hardware sales: the company sold 2.6 million PS5 consoles in the quarter, compared with 4 million a year earlier. Monthly active PlayStation users reached 127 million, up 2 million from the previous quarter. Segment operating income rose 83% to 220 billion yen ($1.4 billion); the year-earlier period included impairment losses and expenses related to Bungie assets and previously capitalized development costs.

Sony’s music segment posted a 10% increase in sales to 598.4 billion yen, supported by live events, merchandising and streaming. Operating income rose 6% to 122.8 billion yen. For its earnings report, Sony used an exchange rate of 159.3 yen to the U.S. dollar.
