After the original “Star Trek” series ended in 1969, creator Gene Roddenberry returned to science fiction with “The Questor Tapes,” a television film he co-wrote in 1974. Walter Koenig, who played Pavel Chekov on “Star Trek,” appeared in the project as Administrative Assistant Phillips, a small role limited to a couple of scenes.
The film follows Questor, an android played by Robert Foxworth. His creator, Dr. Vaslovik, disappears before completing his plans, and Questor sets out to find him after Vaslovik’s colleagues bring the android to life using only half of the creator’s work.
Majel Barrett, another “Star Trek” cast member, also appeared in the film as Dr. Bradley. Barrett was married to Roddenberry and remained his wife until his death in 1991.
Leonard Nimoy was initially expected to star in “The Questor Tapes,” but Roddenberry ultimately cast Foxworth. In a 2011 interview with StarTrek.com, Nimoy recalled that Roddenberry had developed the project for him at Universal in 1971 before choosing another actor when casting began.
