Weta FX and the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) are partnering to develop Taiwan as a hub for AI-driven screen production in Asia. The agreement will be formally launched on Nov. 6 at Taiwan Creative Content Fest in Taipei, immediately after the festival’s opening ceremony.
The initiative has three areas of focus: joint investment, artificial intelligence research and development, and training for emerging talent. The partners have not yet disclosed further details of the arrangement.
TAICCA chair Sue Wang is scheduled to attend the launch with Weta FX CEO Daniel Seah, chief technology officer Kimball Thurston and visual effects supervisor Sheldon Stopsack. The partnership will bring together Taiwan’s technology capabilities and creative workforce with Weta FX’s visual effects expertise, international production experience and global network, with the aim of connecting Taiwanese professionals to projects across the screen industry.
For Seah, the partnership also has a personal connection: he grew up in Taiwan. Weta FX has been building relationships on the island and took part in the Taoyuan International Film & Technology Forum in August.
The agreement aligns with TAICCA’s broader work supporting the use of new technologies in content creation. Its recently concluded TTXC Innovations market platform sought to connect creators, technology developers, investors, buyers and distributors to help bring cultural content and technology to market.
Established by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture in 2019, TAICCA supports Taiwanese content across film, television, animation, publishing, comics, music, gaming and the performing arts, from development and production to distribution and overseas marketing. Its programs include investment, co-production initiatives and international partnerships.
Weta FX is based in Wellington and also has offices in Vancouver and Melbourne. Its work has received eight Oscars for visual effects, 17 Academy Science & Technology Awards, eight BAFTAs for special visual effects, 10 VES Awards in the photoreal feature category and five Emmys. The studio’s latest work on the Avatar franchise was 2025’s Avatar: Fire and Ash. Its productions in development include The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday and Children of Blood and Bone.
