Whit Stillman is in production on A Night at Claridge’s, his first feature film in a decade. Filming is taking place across Limerick in southern Ireland, where local outlets reported this week that production had begun. The project was announced in May, according to Variety.
The film stars Adam Brody, Laura Carmichael, Tom Bennett and Susan Hampshire. Set in autumn 1943, as American soldiers arrive in southern England ahead of D-Day, it follows Miss Roach, a publisher’s reader who has been forced from her London home by bombing. She finds lodgings outside the city and befriends Vicki, a lively German woman, but faces hostility from the boarding house’s bullying Mr. Thwaites.
The arrival of American officer Lt. Dayton Pike offers Miss Roach a possible escape, though Vicki is also drawn to him. The story develops into a psychological conflict that leads to violence and a death, while guilt and doubts about her fiancé push Miss Roach to the limit. An eccentric boss and an elegant, otherworldly hotel feature in the eventual resolution.
Altitude began sales of the film at the most recent Cannes Market. The producers are Georgina Lowe, Valencia Haynes and Suzanne Warren, with Lauranne Bourrachot as co-producer. Stillman’s previous feature was Love & Friendship, released in 2016.
