Spoilers for VisionQuest Episode 7, “Immolation.”
Marvel’s VisionQuest expands the story behind Vision’s origins in its seventh episode, introducing Dr. Phineas Horton and JIM, the android known as the original Human Torch. Horton’s story becomes part of Vision’s journey through his own code as he tries to recover the feelings he lost after being rebuilt by SWORD.
A flashback reveals that Horton created JIM as a replacement for his son, Jim, after the boy’s death. The grieving scientist modeled the synthezoid on himself, and the episode establishes that Horton also served as the model for Vision’s appearance. Vision later encounters projections of Horton and JIM while exploring the depths of his system.
Horton explains that he designed JIM to exist without human emotions. But JIM wanted to become more human, and falling in love caused his systems to overheat, setting the air around him alight. Horton tried to interfere in the relationship, leading to a confrontation in which JIM’s flames killed both of them.
The relationship between creator and creation echoes the conflicts between parents and sons that run through the series, including those involving Vision, Tommy Maximoff and Ultron. As JIM helps Vision unlock his lost feelings, Vision recognizes the parallel between his own effort to suppress emotion and Horton’s attempt to control his synthetic son. Accepting his pain allows Vision to move beyond Horton’s mistakes and become whole.
