Democrats were projected to win a majority in the House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections, while control of the Senate remained undecided late Tuesday. The result was being viewed as a backlash against President Donald Trump.

MS NOW called the House for Democrats shortly before 10 p.m. ET, with CNN, NBC News and CBS News making the same projection soon afterward. The Associated Press had not called the race at the time of the report.

Democrats were leading in several high-profile Senate contests, according to AP results. The races included James Talarico against Ken Paxton in Texas, Abdul El-Sayed against Mike Rogers in Michigan, and Troy Jackson against incumbent Susan Collins in Maine. Roy Cooper was reported to have decisively defeated Michael Whatley in North Carolina, while Annie Andrews was projected to win in South Carolina over Darline Graham.

A 50-50 Senate would give Republicans the advantage, as Vice President JD Vance would cast the deciding vote in a tie.

The article linked Democrats’ gains to Trump’s falling approval ratings, amid higher gas and grocery prices and the administration’s unpopular war with Iran. A New York Times analysis of multiple polls put Trump’s approval at 37% as of Nov. 3, close to the reported low of 36% two weeks earlier. Trump had campaigned for Republican candidates at rallies across the country in recent weeks.

In another result, Keisha Lance Bottoms won Georgia’s gubernatorial race, becoming the first Black woman to serve as governor in the United States.
