Early election-night results from The Voter Poll showed a bleak assessment of Donald Trump and the state of the country. CNN reported that 38% of voters approved of Trump’s performance and 62% disapproved, leaving his approval seven points below his level in the 2018 midterms.
The economy was the most important issue for 39% of voters, followed by democracy at 32%. Asked about their finances compared with two years ago, 44% said they were worse off, 18% said they were better off and 38% said their situation had not changed.
Views of the country were also largely negative: 38% of voters said they were angry about its state, while 37% were dissatisfied. A quarter described themselves as enthusiastic or satisfied. CNN’s David Chalian said the figures pointed to an electorate seeking change, while cautioning that the results could shift as voting continued.
On the economy, 65% said Trump had worsened conditions, compared with 28% who said he had improved them and 8% who said he had no impact. Separately, 61% believed he had prioritized his personal interests, while 39% said he had put the country’s interests first.
The Voter Poll is conducted by SSRS using responses from early voters, mail voters and people voting on election day. Major networks subscribe to the same data, which remains preliminary as results come in.
