Season 2, Episode 5 of Marshals picks up immediately after the previous cliffhanger, showing the team emerging from the wreckage of Rudy Carpenter's exploded hideout. While Carpenter is killed in the blast, the Marshals escape with only minor injuries. The team subsequently infiltrates the home of a suspected accomplice, but Andrea freezes when required to pursue a suspect into a basement. Kayce takes over the chase, following the man into a barn that collapses and nearly kills him for the second time in a short period.
Andrea is deeply affected by the incident and pays Kayce an unexpected late-night visit at East Camp. She apologizes for putting his life at risk and confesses that she has been actively hunting fugitives alongside him to avoid suffering from PTSD-induced nightmares related to her past kidnapping. She further explains that her investigation into her father's murder is an attempt to find peace, while expressing terror about taking over responsibilities when Cal goes on medical leave.
Kayce responds by apologizing for not recognizing Andrea's struggle, admitting he has been preoccupied with Cal's battle against cancer. In a gesture of care, he offers her tea, but she falls asleep on his couch before the water even boils. The scene highlights a growing connection between the two, underscored by Kayce's welcoming smile and Andrea's comfort in resting despite her trauma. Actors Luke Grimes and Ash Santos have previously acknowledged that their characters share a compelling dynamic.
Elsewhere in the episode, Kayce connects with a suspect during negotiations by comparing him to his middle brother, Jamie Dutton, describing him as an outcast who had to be cunning to survive a cruel family. Belle takes matters into her own hands after learning a debt collector scared her son, threatening to imprison the man's daughter if he ever approaches Braxton again. Additionally, Miles' friend Shane Whitebear reveals his intention to run against Rainwater for Chairman of Broken Rock and seeks Miles' endorsement, though Miles remains loyal to Rainwater despite Whitebear's claim that Rainwater is using him as a political prop.
