Cher’s representative responded warmly after Michael Douglas revisited the 1988 best actress Oscar race, saying that Cher “adores Michael Douglas.” The comment came after Douglas’s remarks about Cher’s win for “Moonstruck” drew attention during an appearance on “The Graham Norton Show” with Glenn Close.
Douglas said Close should have won for “Fatal Attraction,” noting that the film marked her fourth Oscar nomination. When the conversation turned to Cher receiving the award instead, Douglas added, “I know, that’s what we all said!” Close replied, “Michael, be kind,” as the studio audience laughed.
At the 60th Academy Awards, Cher won best actress, while Douglas won best actor for “Wall Street.” “Moonstruck” received six nominations and also won for adapted screenplay and supporting actress for Olympia Dukakis. “Fatal Attraction” was nominated for six awards but won none. Both films competed for best picture and best director, awards that went to “The Last Emperor” and Bernardo Bertolucci, respectively.
The 1988 nomination was Close’s first in the best actress category, following three supporting actress nominations for “The World According to Garp,” “The Big Chill” and “The Natural.” She later received four more Oscar nominations, for “Dangerous Liaisons,” “Albert Nobbs,” “The Wife” and “Hillbilly Elegy,” but has not won a competitive Academy Award. Cher had previously been nominated for supporting actress for “Silkwood.”
