Walter Koenig spent more than six decades in entertainment, with his portrayal of Pavel Chekov in the ‘Star Trek’ franchise standing among his best-known achievements. He joined ‘Star Trek: The Original Series’ in its second season, when the production wanted to broaden the show’s appeal to younger viewers.
Nearly a decade later, in 1976, Koenig guest-starred in ‘Columbo’s’ sixth-season premiere, ‘Fade in to Murder.’ The episode follows Peter Falk’s detective as he investigates the murder of a deli owner, a crime staged to look like a robbery. The main suspect is Ward Fowler, a celebrated television detective who assists Columbo while attempting to steer the investigation away from himself.
Koenig has a relatively small role as a detective examining the crime scene. When Columbo arrives, his character explains the police theory about what happened on the night of the killing. The episode’s more prominent ‘Star Trek’ connection is William Shatner, who plays Fowler. However, Koenig and Shatner do not appear together, meaning the episode does not include an on-screen reunion between the two stars.
Koenig later discussed the production during a 2019 interview with the Television Academy Foundation. He recalled that Peter Falk felt Koenig’s original explanation was too similar to Columbo’s own account, so the scene required new dialogue. The production supplied replacement lines but also allowed Koenig to improvise because he would not have been able to memorize them accurately.
According to Koenig, the scene was filmed in a single take. Because the performance was improvised, the crew could not easily reconstruct it for close-ups or repeat only part of the sequence. Koenig said he felt especially proud of the work because it marked his first acting job in a long time; he had not appeared in a television show or film for two years.
That satisfaction was tempered by the final result. Koenig also remarked that viewers could barely recognize him in the finished scene. Even so, ‘Fade in to Murder’ is regarded as a relatively high-ranking ‘Columbo’ episode, making Koenig’s appearance part of a memorable meeting between the long-running detective series and the ‘Star Trek’ cast.
